New anti-gay propaganda aimed at Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. At least two "New Right" groups have recently taken a direct aim at Congressional supporters of justice for gay people in their direct mail fundraising efforts, the Gay Rights National Lobby has learned.

The so-called "Moral Majority," in one of their numerous fund-raising appeals focusing on "the perverts" has targeted co-sponsors of H.R. 1454, the national lesbian/gay civil rights bill, for constituent

pressure.

Their goal, obviously, is to induce "cold feet" on the part of gay rights supporters, both present and potential. While no co-sponsors, those co-sponsors present co-sponsor appears to be near withdrawing support for the legislation, GRNL has learned that a number seem extremely uncomfortable with the significant amount of mail they have received opposing the bill.

Steve Endean, Executive Director of the Lobby, urged those concerned with fair employment and civil rights for gays to write to co-sponsors of H.R. 1454 to express their appreciation.

"While there are millions of

people who appreciate the courage and commitment of our are currently hearing only from our enemies," he noted.

Endean also pointed out that evn if co-sponsorship was not eroded by the efforts of the that even if co-sponsorship was New Right, commitment to teh New Right, commitment to the bill could be reduced if supporters do not hear from lesbians and gay men in equally "significant amounts.'

In a related attack, another "pro-justice" bill was hit by a little-known New Right group calling itself "Public Avocate."

immigration laws, and takes direct aim at Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), one of the bill's co-sponsors...and also at Gay Right National Lobby.

H.R. 3524, the bill that would amend present legislation to allow "alien homosexuals to flood America," Public Advocate wrote, is a danger they feel should be opposed. "With a massive budget and homosexual pressure groups in almost every city in America, the Gay Rights National Lobby has declared war against your family."

Tom Bastow, director of GRNL's Immigration Project, said in reference to this statement, that "I only wish we had a massive budget and the ability to generate the constituent pressure they imply. Seriously, it is very important that Members of Congresss hear from constituents in support of a fair, equitable and just immigration reform, as well as on other gay issues. Constituent pressure is the key to success.'
